The Process of Importing Heavy Machinery

At first glance, the idea of importing heavy machinery into New Zealand may seem daunting. However, by breaking it down into steps and partnering with a trusted customs clearance expert like Platinum®, the process can be smooth and highly rewarding.

1. Finding a Supplier

Research reputable suppliers who offer the heavy machinery or attachments you need. Look for options that allow you to customise. Platinum® in New Zealand only deals with new machinery and attachments, as the biosecurity risk and inspection costs are far too high.

2. Verify Packaging & Transport Readiness

Depending on whether you will import your goods as sea freight Less than a Container Load (LCL) or as sea freight Full Container Load (FCL) will determine if the goods are packaged or unpackaged. Generally, LCL cargo will be transported from overseas to New Zealand and packaged within a plywood case. FCL cargo is generally strapped to secure points within the shipping container. However, your overseas supplier ships your cargo to New Zealand; this is how you will receive the goods.

If your cargo is travelling as LCL, your cargo will share space in the shipping container with other people’s cargo, therefore it is important to make sure that all of your cargo is packaged and labelled.

If your cargo is travelling as FCL, Platinum® will arrange to collect the FCL from the wharf, transport the FCL to the Approved Transitional Facility (ATF), have the FCL unpacked, return the empty FCL back to the wharf and then make the goods available to either you or your nominated transport company to collect from the ATF or Platinum® can deliver the goods to you.

3. Documentation Check

Platinum® liaises with both your overseas supplier and yourself to address all of the New Zealand border requirements before the goods depart from overseas for New Zealand.

As your customs broker, Platinum® needs to be able to have your heavy machinery and attachments released by two government departments, (1) the New Zealand Customs Service (NZCS) and (2) the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI).

Platinum® assesses all of the overseas supplier’s paperwork before the heavy machinery and attachments depart from overseas. Platinum® is concerned with the (1) commercial invoice, (2) packing list, (3) packing declaration, (4) Free Trade Certificate and (5) stamped marine insurance policy.

4. Shipping Logistics

Generally, your overseas supplier is willing and able to ship your goods from overseas to New Zealand. Platinum® is happy to ship your new heavy machinery and attachments, but we do not want to reinvent the wheel. Platinum® proactively oversees the sea freight voyage to New Zealand. We monitor the transit and keep you updated along the way.

5. Customs Clearance

Before your heavy machinery and attachments arrive in New Zealand, Platinum® will have pre-cleared your sea freight cargo through both of the government departments, (1) the New Zealand Customs Service (NZCS) and (2) the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI).

Platinum® always aims to process a pre-clearance on sea freight cargo, this minimises any delays for when it comes time to collect the goods form the wharf or the sea freight depot.

6. Collection and delivery

Suppose you have imported the heavy machinery and attachments as sea freight LCL. In that case, we will need to wait for the shipping container and everyone’s cargo to be unpacked before either you or Platinum® collects the goods within the three (3) free business days.

Suppose you have imported the heavy machinery and attachments as sea freight FCL. In that case, Platinum® will collect the FCL from the wharf, deliver the FCL to the Approved Transitional Facility (ATF), have the FCL unpacked, and return the empty FCL back to the wharf to save you rent/detention fees (charged by the shipping line, generally after the first seven (7) calendar days of arrival at the wharf).

If you have purchased the shipping container and the heavy machinery and attachments, Platinum® will arrange to have your goods re-packed inside the shipping container after the inspection at the ATF.

7. Assembly & Final Preparations

Once the goods are in your possession, you may or may not need to undertake some assembly. Platinum® regularly assists both individual importers who have purchased heavy machinery and attachments for use on their rural property and also commercial importers who import for resale.

How much does it cost to import heavy machinery?

The costs to import heavy machinery with or without attachments will depend upon whether you are importing as LCL or FCL. Platinum® recommends that you ask your chosen supplier to provide you with a proforma invoice that lists the costs for the goods. Platinum® can then provide you with an estimate of New Zealand fees so that you can then purchase the equipment being fully aware of the costs.

Does imported machinery comply with New Zealand regulations?

Your overseas supplier should be asked directly about New Zealand standards. As New Zealand customs brokers, we are concerned with New Zealand border issues such as the NZCS and the MPI. Platinum® only works with new heavy machinery and attachments.

How long does it take to import heavy machinery?

Generally, sea freight cargo can arrive into New Zealand within say four to eight weeks from the date of shipping. Platinum® diligently monitors the cargo from the port of departure through to the port of arrival.

Can Platinum® suggest reliable suppliers?

Platinum® can’t recommend overseas suppliers, as these suppliers are who our current clients rely upon to import goods to New Zealand. Once you have found your supplier, please ask them for a proforma invoice and then Platinum® can quote you the New Zealand fees.

What attachments can I import?

As the goods are new, most, if not all, attachments are acceptable; most of our current clients import items like augers, buckets, rippers, slashers, and horticultural tools. Platinum® ensures that your overseas supplier provides valid border clearance paperwork.

Do I need to assemble the machinery upon arrival?

Some machinery may require partial assembly at your delivery site. Platinum® quite often hears from our clients that they are able to have their machinery in use the same day that they receive their cargo.
