Protecting Your Assets with Marine and Transit Insurance
In the fast-paced world of international trade, the importance of insuring cargo cannot be understated. Whether importing goods to New Zealand or exporting them overseas, understanding the risks and securing appropriate coverage is crucial. Despite the presence of INCOTERMS® 2020 on commercial invoices, many sellers and purchasers don’t fully grasp these terms, leaving their goods vulnerable during transit. Marine and transit insurance is essential to protect goods as they journey across borders, providing peace of mind and financial security should anything go wrong.
Marine and transit insurance is vital for safeguarding your goods from potential financial losses due to damage, theft, or loss during transit. Unfortunately, discussions about insurance often take a backseat to topics like price and delivery speed. Platinum® Marine Insurance™ and Platinum® Transit Insurance™ offer robust solutions to protect your cargo.
Managing Risks at Every Step
Air Cargo Journey
When shipping cargo by air, the journey involves several critical steps:
- The cargo is manufactured, packaged, and dispatched from the warehouse.
- It is then transported to the airline terminal.
- After being placed onboard the aircraft, the cargo travels via air.
- Upon arrival, it is offloaded and placed inside the airfreight terminal.
- Finally, it is collected from the terminal and delivered to the receiver.
Ensuring Security for Less than a Container Load (LCL)
For sea freight, the process becomes even more complex, especially for Less than a Container Load (LCL):
- The cargo is manufactured, packaged, and dispatched from the warehouse.
- It is transported to the freight forwarder’s premises.
- The cargo is consolidated with other shipments inside a shipping container.
- The container is then transported by sea.
- Once it reaches the destination, the container is offloaded from the vessel.
- It is taken to the freight forwarder’s unpack depot.
- Here, the cargo is unpacked and separated.
- A transport company collects the LCL cargo.
- Finally, it is delivered to the receiver.
Full Container Load (FCL)
Similarly, for Full Container Load (FCL) shipments:
- The cargo is manufactured and packed inside a full shipping container.
- The FCL is transported to the seaport.
- It is then placed onboard the vessel.
- The container travels by sea to its destination.
- Upon arrival, it is offloaded from the vessel.
- The FCL is collected from the wharf, delivered directly to its destination, or taken to an unpack location.
- The cargo is then received.

When Containers Fall Off the Vessel
These detailed processes highlight the multiple touchpoints and inherent risks at each stage, from manufacturing to final delivery. The infamous news stories of containers falling off vessels further emphasise the vulnerabilities – such as the CMA CGM vessel losing 44 containers or the Rena breaking up off New Zealand.
